Competition Levels & Descriptions
Note: We’re trying to stay flexible and intuitive with level definitions. Lindy Hop and Jazz Dance competitions are not so codified and we think that’s a good thing!
Newcomer
Welcome!
The spirit of this level is to encourage folks who are new to the experiences of competing, improvised performance, and dancing in the spotlight to try it out and become familiar with common Lindy Hop competition/contest formats.
If you have never entered a Lindy Hop competition or have only entered one or two times before, this competition level is probably for you! If you have ever made finals in a competition at a large-ish Lindy Hop festival/weekend/camp, this level is probably not for you.
Open
This level is open to everybody! No limitations on whether you have won anything or taught anywhere before.
If you dance a secondary role and want to compete in it, but have been dancing/competing in your primary role for Quite Some Time, this level might still be for you over the Newcomer level.
Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you aren’t sure which level will be best for you!
Mix & Match
Sometimes also called Partner Draw, a Mix & Match is a competition where you get a randomly assigned partner!
The focus will be on comfortable & musical social dancing, building a connection with a new partner in real time just like on the dance floor.
Prelims will be all-skate style with numbers. Finals will be individual song spotlights.
Strictly
This is a competition name borrowed from ballroom competition scene, indicating that you enter with a partner.
Open levels of this competition often showcase faster Lindy Hop tempos, but we’ll be focusing on a mid-tempo strictly this year in hopes of seeing some dancing that highlights collaboration; between dancers, and with the music.
Prelims will be all-skate style with numbers. Finals will be jam-style spotlights.
Switch Strictly
A strictly where partners dance both roles and showcase musical switching transitions in the dance.
Prelims will be all-skate style with numbers. Finals will be mid-tempo jam-style spotlights.
2v2 Solo Battle
This competition highlights collaboration in Vernacular/Heritage Jazz solo movement forms. Enter with a partner and face off with another pair! No restrictions on how you spend your time in the round, but judges will be favoring improvised movement over planned choreography.
Let us know if you would like us to match you with a partner!
As indicated by the name, this competition will be battle-style with preliminary rounds leading up to finals.
Short Showcase
This is the time for choreography! We want to see your routines, you combos, your song choices! Groups can be of any size. Pieces must be 2 minutes or shorter and you must be able to submit your music to us via email before the event.
Feel free to email us at [email protected] with any questions!
Any Swing Goes Fast-Feet
No pre-registration required for this high-tempo tap-in fast-feet fest! If you want to participate, please be at the Outdoor Kesey Square Dance on Saturday and we’ll have more details. Competition will probably start around 4pm.
T-Shirts
T-Shirts are available in unisex sizing and the color Black this year! Peep the white & gold edition – oooh.
They are available by pre-order only which will close May 12, so we can give our local printer enough lead time.
